20 Things You Didn’t Know About Coffee

  12. There are two primary species of coffee plant: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica yields less coffee per year because it is hand picked, hence produces the best cup. Arabical beans are slower to mature because they are grown at higher altitudes with cooler weather. Robusta yields much more coffee primarily because they are grown at low altitude climates and are able to be picked by machine. Picking by machine allows all berries; good, bad, ripe, and unripe to be harvested, which is why Robusta coffee produces a more bitter cup.
